Senator Marshall, Barrasso Call for Expanded Grazing Access for American Cattle Producers
Dodge City – U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. (R-Kansas) and U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyoming) led Senate colleagues in calling on the U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Department of the Interior to continue efforts to expand grazing access for livestock producers and strengthen risk management tools that protect cattle producers from market volatility.
In their letter, the Senators wrote:
“The United States’ beef industry is the greatest in the world and one of the brightest spots of American agriculture, making up nearly a quarter of U.S. agriculture receipts. The Federal government must remain laser-focused on partnering with the industry and state efforts for ranchers, expand grazing on public and private lands, and improve protein processing capacity.”
The Senators urged the agencies to finalize the Bureau of Land Management’s grazing rule, reevaluate federal programs that limit grazing capacity, and strengthen livestock risk management tools, and improve meat processing capacity.
With America’s cattle herd at its lowest level in roughly 75 years, Senator Marshall is working to give producers the tools and certainty they need to rebuild the herd, including expanded grazing access, better risk management, transparent beef labeling, and stronger livestock disease research.
Background:
- In July, Senator Marshall introduced the Emerging Tick-Borne Livestock Disease Research Prioritization Act, which designates tick-borne livestock diseases as a high-priority research area at USDA and authorizes competitive grants through existing research programs to support the development of vaccines, therapeutics, and treatments.
- Senator Marshall introduced the Beef Labeling Clarity Act in November 2025 to increase transparency for consumers and help American cattle producers distinguish their beef in the marketplace.
- In March, Senator Marshall praised USDA’s efforts to promote the strengthened “Product of USA” labeling standard.
- Senator Marshall previously introduced the Bona Fide Beef Branding Act and pressed USDA to replace confusing labeling standards with more accurate information about where beef is born, raised, and processed.
- Senator Marshall has consistently advocated for policies that give consumers greater transparency while ensuring Kansas cattle producers receive credit for the high-quality beef they raise.
