Senator Marshall: Democrats Offer No Solutions Beyond More Obamacare Spending

On the ACA expiration date:

“Yeah, well, good morning, everybody. It feels like every day we take a couple steps forward and then we take a step backward. All your viewers understand that healthcare is in crisis. Thanks to Obamacare, premiums have doubled and out-of-pocket costs went from 1,000 to $15,000 a year. Last week on the Senate floor, we offered two different bills, one just to take care of the fraud of Obamacare, and the Democrats shot that down, just the fraud, $25 billion of fraud. We wanted to address a second bill, offering them a year extension in exchange for empowering patients, in exchange for taking part of that $150 billion a year we send insurance companies and giving it to patients. So right now, maybe we’re treading water, but we’re having discussions every day at the staff level, at the Senator-to-Senator level as well, with their friends across the aisle. I’m not, I mean, I wouldn’t bet we’re going to get something done. We may need to turn to reconciliation. We’ll see how we do in January.”

On the House’s health care proposal:

“Yeah, I do, and I think that’s where the Democrats are forcing us to. Remember the Democrats, the Democratic Party does not want us to solve this problem. The Democrat Party would be happy if our country’s in recession, if we were at war, and in complete disarray. But there’s a handful of Democrats who would like to solve this problem. If we can’t, then we turn to reconciliation, where we need 60 votes in the Senate. Look, the House bill doesn’t really address the cost of health care for everybody, and it doesn’t address fraud. It doesn’t address transparency. It will pass over there, but it’s not going to be considered over here; but there is, and I think that our plan is the basis of that. Our plan addresses fraud. It empowers patients, it takes money from big insurance companies and puts it in a healthcare savings account, and then we address preexisting conditions by adding something like a reinsurance pool. We’re going to let health insurance be sold across state lines, added association health care plans take on the pharmacy benefit manager. So, the answer is, yes, we can. We’ll see if we’ve got the will to do it.”

On the Marshall Plan:

“And I can tell you every day I’m going to make that effort throughout January, reaching across the aisle, asking the Democrats for what their solution is. So far, the Democrats have given us no solutions except just throw more money at the problem to extend the Obamacare Biden subsidy. That’s the only solution they’ve offered so far. Until we can get past fraud. I don’t see how we get past anything else, but I’m going to give it my best effort, while at the same time working towards a reconciliation package, which we can get done with 50 votes. Remember, typically, things take 60 votes in the Senate, but we can do reconciliation. We can reconcile the budget with just 50 votes. And again, I’m going down both roads simultaneously.”
