“Hey, John, it’s great to be with you, and I think you nailed it. Despite all the noise around the world and in Washington, D.C., what folks are concerned about back home is just the simple cost of living. Families are safe today, you know, thanks to secure borders, a lot of things that we’ve done to make families safer; they’re really mostly concerned about the cost of living. And if I could, just to say, this is what it feels like to me—is that under Joe Biden, we had four years of inflation, and that the cost of living, specifically the cost of housing, the cost of healthcare, childcare, property insurance, they all went up 50%, and that inflation is cumulative. Even though wages are going faster than inflation now, they’re feeling—you know—these young families especially feel stuck right now. And John, we’re just trying to figure out what we can do to help that young American family live this American Dream that you and I got to live.”
On bringing down the cost of gas:
“John again, that’s common sense, right? We don’t need brand new, complicated policies out of Washington. We just need a common-sense approach. And I would just add to your thoughts: we can’t leave Iran with nuclear weapons either. So, you know President Trump is doing his best to shore that situation up to keep American families safe in the future. But, you know, I think the price of gasoline has always been a bellwether. And it is interesting that no one—the press—did not hammer President Biden during his four years when gas was well over $5 a gallon. For many weeks back home, gas was about $3.40 a gallon. But there are two things that we could do to bring down the price of gasoline. One is higher blends of ethanol; that would bring down the price of a gallon of gasoline, maybe 50 cents a gallon, to use higher blends of ethanol. And number two is our credit card bill. Our credit card bill, which would force competition, would bring down the price of gasoline about 10 cents a gallon. Maybe we want to dive down a little bit into that, but those are two things we can do. But the good news is, when this war is over, when that Strait of Hormuz gets opened back up, you’re going to see the price of gasoline come stumbling down because America is indeed producing plenty of oil here at home.”
On the price of oil in America
“I don’t, John. I mean, what they tell me is that oil is a world commodity, and it’s based upon a world price. And you and I know that the price you’re paying at the refinery is reflective of, probably, West Texas crude, and it’s $10 less than the oil in Saudi…so there’s a lot of humble jumble out there. But it’s interesting to me that the natural gas price has not spiked at home the way the price of gasoline has spiked, and it’s also a world commodity. I don’t have an answer for you.”
