Sen. Marshall’s Statement on Establishment of New National Heritage Area

(Washington, D.C., April 15, 2021) – U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. issued the following statement regarding the proposed establishment of a new National Heritage Area in North-Central Kansas and South-Central Nebraska:

“The National Park Service’s National Heritage Areas program help regions tell their story and highlights the cultural significance of their past,” said Senator Marshall. “As a Republican, I believe in local control and local decision making whenever possible. It is up to the communities included in the proposed National Heritage Area to determine the future of this proposal. I will not get involved until after sufficient local support for the proposal has been proven.”

Background:

Kansas is currently home to Freedom’s Frontier one of the 49 National Heritage Areas operating in the U.S which encompasses 29 eastern Kansas and 12 western Missouri counties and promotes stories of the Kansas-Missouri Border War and enduring struggles for freedom. Just like our national historic trail systems, these programs are informational in nature and barred from imposing rules or regulations on private property owners. They require congressional action to designate a new area, and are prohibited from impacting the ownership of private property within the designated area.
